Why celebrate?
925 years ago the monk Aldwyn began to
build a Benedictine Priory in the wild forest that
clothed the eastern slopes of the Malvern Hills.
Around it grew up the small community of 'Muche
Malverne' which the Priory nurtured through
plague and famine, taking in its elderly and poor,
nursing its sick, providing education and work. In
return, the community saved the Priory Church
from destruction and decay. Much of the original
Norman church remains today, though extensive
reconstruction occurred in the 15th century, with a
new tower and extended east end.
And here we both are, 925 years later. Church
and Town, changing and growing. The building
stands to the Glory of God, and the inspiration of
Man, heart of the old community, and host to the
new, at the anniversary of its founding and of the
Town. Why celebrate? Why not?
During 2010 we, the Priory family, the local
community, the town, the wider church, you who
read this, are invited to celebrate through a series
of special events.

| A Celebration of Science and Faith
April 19th-27th
From its earliest days Malvern Priory has had a link with
science. The second Prior, Walcher, was "an able Astrologer,
Mathematician, a pious Christian and a humble monk". Over
the past 70 years Malvern has been the centre for the development
of radar, and of many other scientific inventions. Is
there a conflict between faith and science? Is this 'hype' or a
real clash?
Five eminent scientists, who are also Christians, spoke of
their science and their faith:
|
Mon 19 | Prof Antony Hewish PhD FRS
Nobel Prize Winner for astronomy.
"Cosmology and Creation"
|
|
Wed 21 | Prof Sir Ghillean Prance FRS VMM
Former Director of Kew Gardens
and Adviser to the Eden Project.
"Evolution or Creation? No, both!"
|
|
Fri 23 | Prof Edward Evans DSc FRCP
Emeritus Prof of Auditory Physiology.
Developer of the cochlear implant
"Is Man a machine? A Neuroscientist's
Perspective."
|
|
Sat 24 | The Revd Dr John Polkinghorne KBE
FRSTempleton Prize winner.
"The Friendship between Science
and Religion".
|
|
Tue27 | Dr Chris Oliver CBE PhD
Visiting Prof of Physics, UC London
and University of Rome,
"Data, Models and Knowledge.
How do we learn, and what can we
know?"
